Stone Temple Pilots: one of the longest running grunge/rock/whatever bands in history, not counting their brief hiatus. Well, they’re back and they’re . . . trying just as hard as ever. In the DVD release of the group’s concert in Chicago, it’s clear that the STP spirit is still alive and kicking. Dean DeLeo is still strumming like a madman and the band is playing just as tough as ever, which is possibly the problem. They’ve undeniably gotten older, Scott Weiland especially. Weiland very often looks like he’s going to pass out onstage, though this could be more due to the rollercoaster of a decade his body has been through. Nevertheless, the band plays on and they still have enough strength to rock it. The hits are an awesome blend of older and newer and not a single classic (“Plush,” anyone?) is missed. Clearly, Alive in the Windy City shows that the band isn’t so much trying to recapture its youth, but reflect on its past and look forward to more. A must-own for fans, a great intro to anyone new to the band.
