Rock the Bells
It’s time again to “represent, respect and recognize” at the 11th Annual Rock the Bells hip-hop festival at the show’s only SoCal stop in San Berdoo. Slated this year to perform classic albums in their entirety are Grammy award-winning artist Ms. Lauryn Hill and the “Queen of Neo Soul,” Erykah Badu. Also on the main stage, legendary performers Cypress Hill, Nas and Black Star (the duo made up of Mos Def and Talib Kweli). Other can’t-miss acts include Common, Raekwon, Ghostface, Mobb Deep, Immortal Technique, Slaughterhouse, Freddie Gibbs, Mac Miller, Killah Priest (performing his debut album, Heavy Mental), Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and that legend of freestyle MC battles, Supernatural. Boy Jones, the son of late Wu-Tang member Ol‘ Dirty Bastard, will share hosting duties with RZA on the 36 Chambers stage, one of four stages (Rock the Bells, Paid Dues and GrindTime Now—reserved for the hottest battle-style performances—are the other three). So get your crunk on and get down with the zooted. (Jane Mast)
